What is HandheldRank?
HandheldRank is an independent review, ranking, and price-tracking site for retro handhelds, edited by me, Retro Phil. Plenty of sites already catalogue every handheld ever made — this is something different: hands-on, opinionated coverage of the devices actually worth buying, backed by live pricing so you’re never guessing whether now’s the right time. Every recommendation here is one I’d genuinely make to a friend, and I want to equip readers with what they need to make their own call.
What you’ll find here
The content splits into a few types, depending on what you’re after. If you’re trying to decide what to buy, start with the Buyer’s Guide. Want to see how devices stack up against each other? The Rankings break that down. If you’re past the buying stage and need setup help, firmware tips, or app recommendations, that’s what the Guides are for. And if you just want to catch a good deal without refreshing store pages all day, the Deal Tracker does that for you.
A note on affiliate links
The site does contain affiliate links, and I want to be upfront about that. If you buy something through one of my links, I get a small cut, it doesn’t cost you anything extra, and it helps keep the lights on. That’s the extent of it. What is your all time favourite handheld console?
Depends how you ask. Most hours logged? Probably the PSP. Best library? Hard to argue against the Nintendo DS. But the one I’ve loved the most, without much hesitation, is the PS Vita. Make of that what you will.
